Challenges Facing the Nation
President Obama addressed many challenges facing our nation in the State of the Union Address. Select an issue you care about that was addressed by President Obama. Explain the issue. Connect the issue to one of the goals of the United States Government as outlined in the Preamble (form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, or secure the blessings of liberty) and explain if you think it is up to the government or the individual citizen to address the issue (solve the problem).

President Obama explained how people who have college loans will pay 15% of their anual income for 25 years in order to pay back what they owe. This will go on for 25 years, and if it is still not paided back, the debt is forgotten. This is an example of insuring domestic tranquility. However, it is the indiviuals responsiblity to payback their loans. If they fall upon hardships, the government is there to help them. Also I think that this is good because it gives everyone a chance to get educated without having a fear of being in debt the rest of their life. Even though the government will help out a little, it is still the individual's responsiblity to try and pay it back as best as they can.
The issue I would like to discuss is the health care reform. The bill would expand coverage by making more lower-income people eligible for Medicaid. They would also forbid insurance companies from denying coverage of pre-existing conditions. These are some general ideas of the reform. I believe that this connects to the goal of, promote general welfare, in the preamble. I do not agree with the health reform, I don't think we should have universal health care. It is the individuals responsibility, not the governments. I mean I think we should give some help to the ones in need, but not totally universalizing it.
One of the many challenges facing our nation that President Obama addressed in his State of the Union Address continues to be the inability of American families to pay for college/universities. The economy is already bad enough as it is, and to send an 18-year-old off to college for upwards of $30,000 a year doesn’t help the cause. Like Obama said during his speech, “no one should go broke because they chose to go to college,” and thus, his idea of renewing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in order to reform the methods of payment for higher-education start to coincide with the Preamble’s goals of insuring domestic tranquility, as well as promoting the general welfare. Specifically, Obama’s plan entails that families will be given a $10,000 tax credit for four years of college, as well as an increase in Pell Grants. Also, after students graduate, they will only be required to pay ten percent of their income on student loans, as well as all of their debt will be forgiven after twenty years—or ten years (if they choose a career in public service). Ultimately, if a student is able to further their education past a high school diploma, it helps the economy. An educated person with a college degree helps create jobs, fulfill jobs, make money—or in short, helps to make the world go ‘round. Therefore, it lies in the hands of the government to make college and college tuition more accessible, since jobs make the economy flourish, which ultimately helps to create a better society and eventually, a better world.
One issue that Obama addressed in the State of Union that really caught my attention was about the student loans. He addressed that debt will drop on school loans after 25 years. Being a high school student with college just around the corner, this is a very relieving and important issue that I believe is in the government's hands to fix. Obama also roughly stated that, "no one should go broke from going to school" which is an argument that a number of people could back up, students or not. Therefore, this issue is an example demonstrating insuring domestic tranquility.
During the State Of Union Address, Pres. Obama discussed the middle-class of the society and how he will double child tax credit, give access to a retirement account for every worker, expanding tax credit, and lastly refinancing to make mortgages more affordable. Now most of the topics I've given may not have a huge effect on me because of the fact that I'm a student in high school, but families that are raising children and are struggling to get them through school can breath easier knowing that some of these ideas were brought up. As for connecting these topics to the consitution, Obama is insuring domestic tranquility, and providing for the common defense. The government can definitely solve these issues, and for the better of the nation/middle-class it would be a blessing. :)
One of the issues that President Obama brought up was that he was going to start taking troops out of Iraq in August. The goal that I think it relates to is the secure the blessings of liberty because he feels that we have done all we can over in Iraq and that we are not helping anymore. I think it is up to government to decide on the war because they are the ones who give out the money so that the US can go to war so I feel they should get the burden if anything goes wrong
An important issue that Obama addressed about student loans. College is getting ridiculously expense and it is getting hard for families to pay for it. I think this is an example of promoting the general welfare. Promoting the general welfare means for the government to provide the essentials for their people. Everyone deserves a high quality education and if college keeps getting harder to pay for then people who deserve a higher education won't be able to get it. I think this problem lies in the hands of the government. They should be able to control student loans.
One of the issues that President Obama brought up during the State of the Union address was a taxing big banks. This would probably fall under promoting the general welfare. By doing this, bigger banks would be forced to do more work and stop taking advantage of customers with extremely high interest rates. This would put more money into the pockets of american families. When banks take advantage of customers the way big banks have, the government kind of has to step in and do something. The big banks were using government bailout money to give the people who got them into that mess big bonuses. If they can afford to do that, they can afford to pay taxes back to the government.
President Obama talks about he plans to help people with money and healthcare reform, many people today cannot afford healthcare because they don't have a job and say that person is in an accident that causes them to be diasbled and badly injured. Plus they don't have medical insurance and how do they pay the hospital bills.I think the healthcare plan is what we all need. So many people have to move and there house is on foreclosure. Having more company's that help people out with paying bills can be very helpful.
When Obama gave the State of the Union Address i noticed that he really wanted everyone to be united- Democrats, Republicans, everybody. He discussed plans for building the economy back up and lowering college tuition. He addressed the Republicans and said that he wanted them to be on board for the plan. This represents "form a more perfect union" because Obama doesn't want any division by any means. He even said that if anyone had any better ideas for what they could do to please tell him. This shows that Obama isn't a fan of factions and really longs for a perfect union.
President Obama talked about the college loans in his speech. I highly agree with that. I think it will really start to help our economy. I don't think that kids who want to inhance there learning, to be further educated and do better in life should have to suffer the consquinces of paying off student loans for the next fifty years of there lives. Since I will soon be one I strongly agreed with his purposal of that.
President Obama talked about the issue of the health care reform. This is related to promoting the general welfare from the Preamble. President Obama thinks it will make the economy better if everyone had health care. I don't agree with this reform because I think that it is up to the individual to provide their own health care, not the government. I don't see why people who have provided health care for themselves on their own, should be taxed to pay for other people's health care. I understand about wanting to help a little bit, but part of being human is being responsible for your own actions. We can't provide for everyone, but we can try and help a little.
I would like to talk about President Obama changing Education.
He will recruit an army of teachers and develop innovative ways to reward teachers who are doing a great job. After graduating high school, all americans should be prepared to attend at least one year of job training or higher education to better equip our workforce
One of the many challenges facing our nation that President Obama addressed in his State of the Union Address was how important it is for Democrats and Republicians to come together as a nation to solve potical problems resulting from loss of jobs, healthcare refrom, bringing the troops home in a reseasonable time, lowering taxes, and educational opportunities.
The issue that i was most interested in was the issue on the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He mainly touched on how the wars have progressed and what will happen with them in the future. I think that this problem supports many things that are in the preamble, for example, providing for the common defense and promot general welfare. I think that this subject is both the governments issue and the peoples and the same time. It is up to the government to support the people but the people also have to support the government in order for that to happen
